# NAICS Code Lookup

> Look up a NAICS 2022 code or find the code for a business activity, with the official title and parent sector.

Canonical: https://corpoapi.com/checks/naics-code-lookup

Type a business description or a 2 to 6 digit code and see the matching NAICS 2022 codes with their official title, description and parent sector. The list ships with the page, so the search runs in your browser with no account and no limit.

## What the check reads

- **The code levels** The list carries every level: 2-digit sectors, 3-digit sub-sectors, 4-digit industry groups, 5-digit industries and the 6-digit industry codes.

- **A description search** The words you type are matched against the official title and description, case-insensitively, and a title match ranks above a description match. Results stop at eight so the answer stays readable.

- **A code search** A numeric query is treated as a code. A full 6-digit code resolves to one row; a shorter code returns it and its children, so 23 lists the Construction sector and everything under it.

- **The parent sector** Every result names the 2-digit sector it belongs to, because the sector is usually what a report groups by rather than the 6-digit code.

- **The vintage** This is NAICS 2022. When the Census Bureau publishes a new vintage, the list here is replaced as one file. The API carries the scheme and vintage per company, so a stored code stays reproducible.

## Where the data comes from

- [US Census Bureau: NAICS](https://www.census.gov/naics/): The official North American Industry Classification System and the 2022 code list this page ships.

## Worked examples

### A full code resolves to one industry

Input: `236220`

- **Code**: 236220

- **Title**: Commercial and Institutional Building Construction

- **Level**: 6-digit industry

- **Parent sector**: 23, Construction

A six-digit code is the most specific level. The parent sector is the two digits it starts with.

### A description resolves to the matching code

Input: `custom computer programming`

- **Code**: 541511

- **Title**: Custom Computer Programming Services

- **Level**: 6-digit industry

- **Parent sector**: 54, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services

The description search matches words in the official title and description. A broad phrase can return several codes, ranked with the closest title first.

### A short code lists the sector and its children

Input: `23`

- **Code**: 23

- **Title**: Construction

- **Level**: 2-digit sector

- **Contains**: All 3, 4, 5 and 6-digit codes under 23

A two-digit query is a sector, so the result is the sector row followed by the codes inside it. Turn the query into a longer code to narrow it.

## A description in, a code out

Type what a business does, such as custom computer programming, and the lookup returns the NAICS codes whose official title or description matches, best match first. Type a code instead and it returns that code and everything beneath it, so 23 shows the whole Construction sector.

- Search by a word or phrase from the description
- Search by a 2 to 6 digit code
- Official title, description and parent sector on every result

## The official NAICS 2022 table

The data is the US Census Bureau NAICS 2022 code list, the same one the statistical agencies use. It runs from the 2-digit sectors down through the 3, 4 and 5-digit levels to the 6-digit industries, and every level is searchable. It is public data that ships with this page, so there is no query and no key.

- Every level from sector to 6-digit industry
- Public data, no registration and no API key
- The 2022 vintage, the current published list

## Codes on a company profile

A NAICS code classifies what a business does. The API returns each company's activity codes on its profile, under the register's own scheme, so you can join a code to the companies in a state and filter by what they do. The example below shows the activity block on a real profile.

- Activity codes come back on the company profile
- The scheme is the register's own, NAICS for US state datasets
- Join a code to a state search to list companies in a sector

## FAQ

### What is a NAICS code?

The North American Industry Classification System is the standard the United States, Canada and Mexico use to classify businesses by activity. A NAICS code is a two to six digit number for one part of that hierarchy, from a broad sector down to a specific industry.

### Is this the official code list?

Yes. The data here is the US Census Bureau NAICS 2022 code list, public data with the official titles and descriptions. It ships with the page, so the search runs in your browser and asks no one.

### Can I look up a company by its NAICS code?

Not on this page. This page maps a description to a code or a code to its title. To find companies, use a state business search, then read the activity block on each company's profile, where the register's own code is returned.

### Why do some companies show no NAICS code?

Not every register publishes an activity classification, and some that do use their own scheme. Where the register gives a code, the profile carries it under that scheme. Where it gives none, the activity block is empty and we say so rather than guess.

### How current is the list?

It is the NAICS 2022 vintage, the current published list. When the Census Bureau publishes a new vintage, the list on this page is replaced as a single file, and the API keeps the scheme and vintage on each company so a stored code stays reproducible.

### Can I call this from the API?

The code list is static public data, so there is nothing to call for the lookup itself. The API is where the codes meet the companies: fetch a profile and its activity block carries the register's code, and search returns the companies you then classify.
