# Swedish Organisationsnummer Check

> Validate a Swedish organisationsnummer format (ten digits with Luhn check digit) before you search the register.

Canonical: https://corpoapi.com/country-search/swedish-company-search

Type a Swedish organisationsnummer and the check reports whether it is ten digits with a valid Luhn check digit. It looks only at the number, not the register. Bolagsverket is the Swedish register where the company is confirmed, and our free company search finds the company when you only have a name.

## What the check reads

- **Ten digits** Spaces and hyphens are stripped before the count. A number with letters fails, because an organisationsnummer has no letters.

- **The written form** The hyphen is often written before the last four digits, as in 556029-5197. It is formatting only, so the check accepts the number either way.

- **The Luhn check digit** The last digit is computed by the Luhn rule over the first nine. A mismatch means the number is not well formed, which usually points to a transposed pair.

- **The lead digit** The first digit groups the holder: 5 for a limited company, 6, 7, 8 and 9 for associations, foundations and similar. The check reads it for context but does not reject a valid number on it.

- **What this does not check** Whether the number was ever issued, which company holds it, and whether that holder is still active. That lives in Bolagsverket, not in the number.

## Where the data comes from

- [Bolagsverket](https://bolagsverket.se/): The Swedish register. Every organisationsnummer this check accepts can be looked up here.

- [Allabolag](https://www.allabolag.se/): An independent company directory, useful for a name search. It is not the register.

## Worked examples

### A well-formed organisationsnummer

Input: `5567037485`

- **Organisationsnummer**: 5567037485

- **Digits**: 10

- **Luhn check digit**: Matches

- **Verdict**: Well formed

- **Where to confirm**: Bolagsverket

Spotify AB is a public example of this number shape in the Swedish register. This page vouches for the format only; Bolagsverket is where the company behind it is confirmed.

### The same number in its written form

Input: `556703-7485`

- **Digits**: 10

- **Hyphen**: Ignored

- **Luhn check digit**: Matches

- **Verdict**: Well formed

The hyphen before the last four digits is formatting, so it does not change the result.

### A broken check digit

Input: `5560295198`

- **Digits**: 10

- **Luhn check digit**: Does not match

- **Verdict**: Not well formed

- **Likely cause**: Two digits transposed or one mistyped

Changing the final digit breaks the Luhn sum, so the number cannot be a real organisationsnummer.

## Ten digits and a Luhn check digit

A Swedish organisationsnummer is ten digits, often written with a hyphen before the last four, as in 556029-5197. The first digit groups the holder and the last is a check digit computed by the Luhn rule. The check strips spaces and hyphens, counts the digits and recomputes the check digit.

- Ten digits, hyphen optional
- Luhn check digit recomputed
- The written form 556029-5197 accepted

## A valid number is not a registration

The check runs in your browser and never contacts the register. A number that passes is well formed, and that is all it proves. It does not prove the number is issued, that the company is registered, or that it is still active. Bolagsverket is the authority for that.

- A valid number does not prove a company exists
- Status and filings live in the register
- The check never reaches Bolagsverket

## Looking up a company, not a number

Allabolag is an independent directory that lists Swedish companies, and it is useful when you have a name. This page is the other half: when you have the number, it tells you whether the number could be real, and Bolagsverket confirms it. If you have a name instead, our free company search reaches the register.

- Allabolag is a directory, not the register
- Bolagsverket is the register itself
- Search by name with the free company search

## FAQ

### Is this Allabolag?

No. Allabolag is an independent directory of Swedish companies. This page checks the format of an organisationsnummer. To look a company up by name, use Allabolag or our free company search, and confirm the record at Bolagsverket.

### Does a valid organisationsnummer prove the company exists?

No. A valid format means the number is well formed and the check digit matches. It does not prove the number was issued, that a company is registered under it, or that the company is still active. Only Bolagsverket can say.

### Why does my number fail the check digit?

The last digit is computed from the first nine. A failure usually points to two transposed digits or one mistyped one. Recheck the number against Bolagsverket before assuming the company is gone.

### What is the difference between the number and the company name?

An organisationsnummer identifies the legal entity and never changes. A trading name can change and is not unique, which is why a number resolves exactly and a name is always a search.

### Can I look up a company by name instead?

Yes. The free company search matches names fuzzily against the Swedish register and returns the closest candidates with their organisationsnummer, status and address.

### Is the check free?

Yes, and there is no account to make. The Luhn check digit is recomputed in your browser, so a typo comes back without spending anything, and a well-formed organisationsnummer uses one of the tool's 5 daily checks.
